As part of our commitment to giving 1% of revenue to supporting the planet through our partnership with 1% for the Planet<\/a>, as well as giving 1% to Paying the Rent \u2013 donating to community-controlled organisations that support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, we bring you the two organisations that we\u2019ve chosen to support for the first quarter of 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the Planet - Environs Kimberley<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019ve ever been lucky enough to visit The Kimberly region, you know how important it is to preserve and protect this sacred land. In fact, just a few weeks ago, this 17,300 year old Kimberly kangaroo was recognised as Australia\u2019s oldest rock artwork<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The region is home to arguably the world\u2019s most pristine tropical coastline and tropical woodlands that are part of the largest, most unspoilt savannah in the world. Its wetlands, rivers and rainforests are internationally significant and the north Kimberley is the only place in Australia to have experienced no mammal extinctions. Yet this area\u2019s landscapes and ecosystems are under threat like never before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s hard to think that anyone would want to destroy this land for their own gain. But given reports earlier this year<\/a> that yet another resources company has made an application to frack on the Fitzroy River, it\u2019s time to renew calls to protect this Heritage-listed river that provides water and livelihoods for thousands of people. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the peak environmental NGO for the Kimberley region in far north-west Australia, Environs Kimberley<\/a> is dedicated to looking after the health of the land and waters of the region. Through advocacy and on-ground cultural and natural resource management projects, they work at the local level with communities, landholders and land managers, especially Aboriginal traditional owners and their ranger groups, to tackle problems such as wildfire, weeds and feral animals, and to protect local plants and animals, and their habitats.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every donation, no matter how small, supports the work they do, and so this quarter we\u2019re proud to give $2,379 to help Environs Kimberley protect the region\u2019s plant, animal, bird and marine species. You can sign the petition to Protect the Fitzroy<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paying the Rent - Black Rainbow<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Black Rainbow<\/a> is a national Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex, Queer, Sistergirl and Brotherboy (LGBQTI+SB) organisation that pursues positive health and wellbeing for these communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Originally focused on suicide prevention given the alarming rate of suicide and self-harm amongst these populations, Black Rainbow has recently begun to expand its horizons to include a range of community projects and initiatives that support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander LGBQTI+SB people. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

One such initiative is \u2018Contagion of Love\u2019, a micro-grant program to invest in Indigenous LGBTIQ+SB individuals who are excelling in their field and require some additional support.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 2021 Mardi Gras theme was \u2018RISE<\/a>\u2019, perfectly capturing the challenges and hardships that 2020 presented, while calling on the community to rise again through love, compassion, respect and understanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Representation and visibility of First Nations queer people is crucial for all the queer identifying mob who may be watching from home.\" - <\/em>Jane Strang<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indigenous-owned and operated, we are proud to support Black Rainbow with a donation of $2,379 this quarter and encourage you to support their life-saving work in any way you can.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
