There’s nothing more delightful than talking to a bagel fanatic. The sometimes unassuming treat can be known to incite some passionate sentiment from its die-hard fans, often American expats, who ‘just wish there was a place for real, traditional, American style bagels in Australia’ (said in a New York accent).

New Jersey born Zev, a bagel fanatic himself, decided that he would do something about the Australian bagel drought and armed with a healthy dose of bagel obsession and his own ripper bagel recipes, he opened ‘5 & Dime bagel co’ in Melbourne’s CBD.

Zev’s culinary history saw him work as a chef both here and overseas, before coming to Australia with his partner and putting his passion for real deal bagels to work, and opening his flagship store (he was previously peddling his bagels at Melbourne farmer’s markets).

The creation of a ‘5 & Dime’ bagel is serious business, the process is lengthy and very much a labour of love. Pure Finance was excited to lend a hand in helping arrange finance for some new bagel making gear including a 2 tonne super oven that Zev imported from Canada (to supersede the old pizza oven that was being used in the early days of 5 & Dime). The oven is designed specifically for bagels, to keep them ‘crunchy on the outside, soft and chewy on the inside’.

Stop it.

So, if you love bagels (as much as we do), be sure to pay 5 & Dime a visit. Sydneysiders might have to travel a little further (any excuse to go to Melbourne though, right guys?) and the only problem now is to decide what to have ON your bagel. . . . . .

5 & Dime bagel co is located at 16 Katherine Place, Melbourne, VIC.
The café trades Mon- Fri from 7:00am – 2.30pm and you can also find their bagels at Farmer’s Markets and selected grocery stores around Melbourne.
