The Sydney brunch scene is a competitive one, and in this town, it's not who you are, but what your ‘smashed avo on rye looks like on insta’ that counts. So, if you’re a small, self funded start up, it pays to have a point of difference. Which Glider Cafe has, in spades.
The original Glider café in Potts Point, and now a sister eatery in the city’s newest (and hippest) laneway development ‘Kensington St’ are the brain child of Mark and his wife, Pla.
After living in Thailand for several years, and rather impressively, having never worked in hospitality before, the couple decided to open their first venture in Potts Point with nothing more than a credit card and an idea to bring Pla’s traditional Thai family recipes to Sydney’s Brunch scene.
It was a winning combo, merging 2 of Sydney’s latest love affairs: Brunching and Thai street food. (If they could find a way to include miniature dachshunds, I’m sure people would never leave.)
The venture was a huge success and soon, the pair had plans to open their second establishment ‘Glider KS’. Only this time, Pure Finance were there to lend a financial hand, and take away some of the stress associated with starting a brand new business.
Both places adopt the same aesthetic, in terms of fit- out and fare, and Sydney is loving it. Oh, and for the record, their ‘avocado on toast’ reads on the menu as follows: avocado on toast with feta, Thai basil, truffle-infused honey and black pepper.... Yep.
